Spine Surgery in India (Discectomy & Spinal Fusion) — Expert Care at a Fraction of the Cost
Back pain that does not go away is not something you should have to live with. When a herniated disc, collapsed vertebra or spinal instability reaches the point where it is affecting your ability to walk, work or sleep — surgery may be the most effective path to long-term relief. India is one of the world’s leading destinations for spine surgery, offering advanced procedures at internationally accredited hospitals for 60 to 70 percent less than the cost in the Gulf or Europe.
At SafarTibbi, we connect patients from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Africa with India’s finest spine surgeons — with full Arabic-speaking support from the moment you contact us to the day you fly home.
Common Conditions Treated
Herniated Disc (Slipped Disc)
One of the most common causes of back and leg pain. When the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through its outer casing, it presses on nearby nerves causing pain, numbness and weakness. Discectomy removes the damaged portion of the disc and relieves the pressure.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the nerves running through it. Most common in the lower back and neck. Causes pain, cramping and weakness in the legs, particularly when walking or standing for long periods.
Degenerative Disc Disease
Age-related wear and tear on the spinal discs that causes chronic pain and instability. When conservative treatments fail, spinal fusion permanently joins two or more vertebrae to eliminate painful movement between them.
Spondylolisthesis
A condition where one vertebra slips forward over the one below it. Causes lower back pain and leg symptoms. Treated with spinal fusion to stabilise the spine and decompress the affected nerves.
Sciatica
Sharp, shooting pain running from the lower back down one leg. Caused by compression of the sciatic nerve — most commonly by a herniated disc. Minimally invasive discectomy offers rapid and lasting relief for severe cases.
Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
For patients who have had prior spine surgery elsewhere without satisfactory results, India’s top spine centres offer revision surgery with advanced navigation and robotic technology.
Spine Surgery Options Available in India
Microdiscectomy
A minimally invasive procedure to remove the herniated portion of a disc pressing on a spinal nerve. Performed through a small incision with a microscope — preserves surrounding muscle and tissue. Hospital stay of one to two days. Most patients walk the same day as surgery.
Lumbar Spinal Fusion
Two or more vertebrae are permanently joined using bone grafts and titanium implants to eliminate painful movement. Recommended for degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis and spinal instability. Available as open or minimally invasive surgery.
Cervical Disc Replacement
An artificial disc replaces a damaged cervical disc in the neck — preserving natural movement unlike fusion. Increasingly preferred over fusion for younger, active patients with neck disc problems.
TLIF / PLIF (Transforaminal / Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion)
Advanced fusion techniques that approach the spine from the back, allowing decompression and stabilisation in a single procedure. Widely performed at India’s top spine centres.
Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery
Available at Fortis, Apollo and Medanta, robotic guidance ensures sub-millimetre screw placement accuracy — significantly reducing the risk of complications and improving long-term outcomes. India is one of very few countries in Asia where robotic spine surgery is routinely available at this price point.

Recovery Timeline
Day of Surgery
Most spine procedures at Fortis take 1.5 to 3 hours depending on complexity. Patients are encouraged to sit up and take short walks on the same day as microdiscectomy.
Days 2–4 — Hospital Stay
Minimally invasive procedures require 2 to 3 days in hospital. Larger fusion surgeries may require 4 to 5 days. Physiotherapy begins immediately to restore movement and prevent stiffness.
Week 2 — Early Recovery
Most patients move around independently. Pain reduces significantly. Wound healing progresses well. Outpatient physiotherapy continues.
Week 3–4 — Cleared to Fly
International patients are typically cleared to fly home at 3 to 4 weeks following a final check-up and discharge report from the surgeon.
Month 2–3 — Return to Daily Life
Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities by 6 to 8 weeks. Driving and heavier activity from 3 months onwards.
Month 6 — Full Recovery
Full surgical recovery for fusion procedures is typically reached at 6 months, when the bone graft has fully integrated. Patients report significant and lasting pain relief.
